Exercising Prayer

I have been meditating on the Lord’s Prayer as a discipline to help me count the lengths of the pool as I am swimming. That’s another story. There is so much I could share about how the Lord has led me to pray in that, but I’ll skip to the end.

We say “Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever.” It can be easy to rush over that little sentence to get to the ‘Amen’ at the end but when you pause on each word it sets a lot of things in perspective.

Yours – Lord, we belong to you, we are yours and you are ours.

Is the kingdom – Lord, you put us in homes, towns and countries sometimes for a long time, sometimes for a short season. But that is not where our citizenship is held. First and foremost, we are citizens of your kingdom. Help us to rest in that, especially when we feel restless or frustrated in the place that we are.

The power – Lord, you are the one in charge here. Not the government, not the church, not an organisation, not us! You Lord are the one with the power over all things. We pray that you will exercise your power and authority over the kingdom of this world so that your good and perfect plans will be accomplished for us and in us.

And the glory – Lord, we love you. Unfold the story of our lives in the way that magnifies your glory, so that we can see how no season is wasted but part of your incredible provision for us.

Forever – Lord, give us the gift of faith to hold onto your promises that our lives are in your hands, for all things, and forever.

Amen – Praise be to the Lord forever! Amen and Amen.
