Towards the end of John’s gospel he wrote, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30-31).
We know we’re supposed to live as people who believe, and I would add based on Paul’s letters, we show we believe based on the ways we live out our faith following Jesus 24/7—but what does that look like?
The Message version of Romans 8:15-28 says that we should be living as people who are “Pregnant with Anticipation”, a passage that I think describes well the attitude, presence, and spirituality of the person who is living as a believer AND as a follower of the Resurrected Jesus in a world that is broken and in desperate need of a Saviour.
Whether you have experienced pregnancy or not, you have probably been around someone who has. Pregnancy, for most women, is a long period of being uncomfortable, blended with expectancy of something (or someone!) wonderful arriving at the end. There is lots to groan about in this world, but part of our journey is learning how to groan with joyful expectancy! As Paul said, “…the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us” (Rom 8:18).
