Elmo, the iconic red puppet from Sesame Street took to “X” to see how everyone was handling 2024 so far. He simply posted, “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” But the post went viral as it was viewed by more than 200 million users read it and the responses were not what people expected. Thousands of people poured out their feelings about how sad and depressed they are.
“Not feeling too tickled about life rn, Elmo,” one user added to the conversation. Another said, “Elmo, I’m suffering from existential dread over here.” And another, “Not gonna lie … I’m tired, Elmo. A lot’s going on, Little Red,”
Many people added comments like this, “We need to start checking in on our friends. Thousands of people are telling Elmo that they’re depressed. Our friends are out here venting their sadness to an emotionally attentive Muppet,” one user wrote.
This article came through on a news feed as we were preparing for one of our Sunday morning fellowships. As we read it we found ourselves crying. What a sad and lonely world we live in that the best people can do is to pour out their feelings to a puppet on social media.
We need JESUS! And we need to be sharing the vision he has given us for his Way of Life that brings life and hope and joy in the fellowship of friends. People are so desperate to share their ‘souls’ with a red puppet, imagine what a gift it would be to them to invite them to meet Jesus and join you in a life-transforming fellowship band or house fellowship.
I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.
Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.‘
