Psalm 139 ponders God’s infinite knowledge and presence in the life of the Psalmist, ‘….You know when I sit and when I rise: you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways’ (v. 2-3). In her book, Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life, author Tish Harrison Warren flips the script of this familiar Psalm to help the reader intentionally make room for God in the everyday moments of ordinary life. Harrison considers the most commonplace actions of daily twenty-first century life, connecting these seemingly secular and mundane moments to the sacred presence of God, who is already active in the world. Exploring the mundane morning routines of waking up and brushing teeth, she recalls the human satisfaction found in rituals, of giving thanks, and God’s purposeful design of the human body. She links confession and pardon with the frantic search for lost car keys, the blessings and banes of checking email, and how getting stuck in traffic can offer perspective on God’s perfect design for time. Even the evening routines of winding down the day at bedtime is not neglected as Harrison reminds the reader every moment is an opportunity to worship God. The result is a highly readable text that is part journal, part devotional, and even includes a discussion guide with some suggested practices that I highly recommend for any disciple seeking inspiration, encouragement, affirmation, or even a little challenge in their daily, faithful discipleship.
